TEAM LEADERSHIP takes many forms :

TASK leaders (keep the team focused on its goals)
SOCIAL leaders (make sure everyone is involved)
EXTERNAL leaders (represent the team with media or coaching staff)
TOXIC leaders (those whom others look up to, but have a negative impact on others)

The data gathered from team members’ completion of the Sport Team Leadership Questionnaire (STLQ) will provide THE HEAD COACH with critical information. All responses are the perceptions of the players—a true representation of whom THEY follow, and whom THEY see as team leaders. This is not always what the staff perceives.

Categories on the Questionnaire include characteristics of TASK, SOCIAL, EXTERNAL and TOXIC leadership to provide a true picture of operating leadership dynamics. With this information the head coach or staff can be confident in understanding the LOCUS of leadership in each area…and address deficiencies.

Knowing who your leaders are will allow you to work with them 1 on 1 if necessary to get them on your “page” entering Fall, or to deal with any TOXIC players in leadership positions who are negatively affecting your team and may bring negative media attention/ distractions if not addressed.
As you know, one of the great rewards and challenges of coaching is that every year is different, every team is a new team, and each group has its own unique characteristics that affect team chemistry. TEAM CHEMISTRY/ COHESION does affect PERFORMANCE potential and team member satisfaction (retention). You can assume you know the influence dynamics of your team, but it may be best to know for sure.
Discover if there are players limiting team growth through TOXIC leadership and gain a better understanding of the REALITY of your team.

PROCEDURE

… Once you have decided to get a Team Leadership Assessment, you will receive the necessary materials, then simply …

1. Set a time and date for the assessment (team meeting setting)
2. Introduce the topic and review procedure
3. Display a complete Team Roster
4. Administer SPORT TEAM LEADERSHIP QUESTIONNAIRE (STLQ) on-site or by an assistant who will proctor the process and return questionnaires to me through the mail.
5. TEAM LEADERSHIP REPORT is returned to HEAD COACH

THIS WILL BE THE MOST VALUABLE “SELF-SCOUT” YOU WILL EVER DO WITH YOUR PROGRAM
